Here's the First Planet Gift Idea for the 2004 Holiday Season ...

The 2005 Go Play in the Street Wall Calendar

By Robert "Still Thinks It's 1984" Burnson

Inline speed queen Kim Perkins and skater pal Patricia Rayburn are not only hot on wheels. They are also giving the Calendar Girls a run for their money.

Their 2005 Go Play in the Street Calendar is a stunning tribute to the beauty of inline skating and its participants!

The calendar features photos of inline skaters from Korea to Canada with stops along the way in Duluth, Miami, Nice and the Netherlands. Among the dozen photos are gripping racing scenes, dazzling cityscapes and beguiling pastorals.

On the playful side, there's a bathtub scene featuring one of the Inline Calendar Girls (I'm not saying which one) in her racing boots and nothing else. There's also an action photo of Canadian National coach Barry Publow, which I can only describe as cheeky.

This is the second year for the Go Play calendar. "We got such a tremendous response last year that we decided to do it again," says Kim, who last month won her third straight Athens to Atlanta ultra marathon.

This year, unlike last, the calendar is out in time for the holidays. Last year, Kim and Patricia waited for the inline race directors of the world to settle on race dates, which were included in the calendar, and that pushed back the publication into the New Year. This year, they decided to simply include the web addresses for the races, so they could get the calendar to the printer on time.

The photos in the calendar were taken by skater-photographers from all over the planet. They are uniformly spectacular. One of the most remarkable is the cover photo: a kaleidoscopic Atlanta cityscape sunset, taken by Marc St. Pierre.

All in all, the calendar is a fitting tribute to the greatness of inline skating ... and at $12.95 (US), it's a bargain!

You can buy it online at the Go Play in the Street web site. It will also be available in selected skate shops.

(And let me know if you have any other holiday gift ideas. ... We've still got more than a month to go before x-day!)
