Only Three Skaters Show Up for First Los Cabos Inline Marathon

But Organizers Are Optimistic About Next Year!

By Robert "Shoulda Been There" Burnson

The organizers of the Los Cabos International Marathon had to be disappointed with the inline portion of their event (Sunday, December 5): Only three skaters showed up for the full marathon.

But remarkably, they are apparently not letting it get them down. They are already talking about 2005, when they expect many more skaters! (You gotta like this bunch!)

In case you don't remember, the Los Cabos Marathon is an established running event, now in its fourth year, that added inline skating (a full 42 K marathon and a 5 K fun skate) this year.

It is put on by the Rodolfo Gomez Club, a running club named for the famous Mexican marathoner, who serves as coach and CEO. The club was billing the inline marathon as the first and only annual marathon in Latin America.

In my dealing with the marathon, I have been trading emails with its public relations director, Jamile Alaluf.

Jamile may describe herself as a public relations director, but she is also one of Mexico's top middle distance runners. (Her specialty is the 800 meters, in which she is ranked third in the country.)

I asked Jamile to send a report on how the new inline race went. A lessor public relations director might have ignored the request, considering the event's negligible participation. But not Jamile: She sent back this blunt response:

Dear Robert,

We had only three skaters in the 42 K and some friends who went through the 5 K without a number or timing chip. However, I received a lot of emails from U.S. skaters who read the interview on your site and were interested, but said that it was too late for them to travel.

The results are at: http://www.marcate.com.mx/resultados1.htm

Also, I collected some comments from our pioneer skaters. They said the route is pretty good but that it needs to be cleaned up before the race because they found some little stones and sand in some parts of the road.

Attached please find a picture of one of our skaters! They had a lot of fun, and a lot of people want to skate next year.

I am sure I will need your advice for next year, please send me any material you have like rules, regulations, etc.

Best regards!

Yamile
