How to Become King of the Hill?

QHi, Bill: I want to learn the secret of skating uphill? Whatever it is, I don't have it! What is the correct body position, stride, form, etc. Do you have any suggestions besides sticking to the flats? Thanks and cheers! - Prone in Chicago

Hi, Prone in Chicago: There are varying opinions on the best technique for climbing — and they depend on the steepness of the hill. But in general, here are the rules:

  1. Stand more upright.
  2. Take shorter strides (with your side push).
  3. Go a little more to the side as you slide across — not into — the surface.
  4. Use your arms vigorously, bringing them a bit more across your body than usual.
  5. Maintain a high level of fitness!

The last rule is key. When it comes to climbing, it's survival of the fittest.

Cheers, Bill
