Hi, Bill: I want to learn the secret of skating uphill? Whatever it is, I don't have it! What is the correct body position, stride, form, etc. Do you have any suggestions besides sticking to the flats? Thanks and cheers! - Prone in Chicago
Hi, Prone in Chicago: There are varying opinions on the best technique for climbing — and they depend on the steepness of the hill. But in general, here are the rules: - Stand more upright.
- Take shorter strides (with your side push).
- Go a little more to the side as you slide across — not into — the surface.
- Use your arms vigorously, bringing them a bit more across your body than usual.
- Maintain a high level of fitness!
The last rule is key. When it comes to climbing, it's survival of the fittest. Cheers, Bill ... • Ask Bill a question • Go to the Ask Bill Begg! Archive • Skate Tip of the Week Archive • Beginners Guide to Outdoor Racing • Beginners Guide to Inline Skating
