In this 5-part guide, three-time a2a champion Kim Perkins explains all the basics of inline racing. Topics include: race categories; drafting and pacelines; race dynamics and interval training; fashion, food and packing; and how to get more involved.

When I first fell in love with inline racing, I lived in a small town where I was just about the only skater, and I knew nothing about competitive skating.

I read all kinds of very detailed things on the Net, and I got very frustrated trying to figure out the basics all by myself. Later I discovered that many of my basic questions were considered common knowledge within the skate community — indeed, it seemed like most skaters had forgotten that everyone wasn't born knowing this stuff!

Since then, I have noticed that there are lots of people in my earlier predicament — hooked on skating, but new to the community. Many of them have written me with their questions, which make up much of the guide that follows.

If you are already skating in the Advanced category or above, this guide is not for you. This guide barely mentions Pro racing. The words "double push" do not appear anywhere except in this sentence. And the kinds of details that people like to argue about are completely missing — on purpose.

Instead, this guide is meant to provide some first words of advice for anyone who loves skating outdoors and wants to take part in races, marathons or other inline events.
