Helping Champions Live Their Dreams
Send the Best Starts New Fund Drive
By Planet staff

The Send the Best organization is launching a new fund drive to raise money for the U.S. World Team.

The nonprofit group is calling the fund-raiser "Helping Champions Live Their Dreams."

The project's goal is to raise enough money to ensure that the top U.S. skaters can compete in this year's World Championships in Anyang, South Korea.

At this time, it is not clear whether all the best skaters will be able to go.

In the past, travel expenses for world team members have been paid by USA Roller Sports, the national governing body for inline and roller skating.

But this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee cut off all funding for the governing body, leaving it without money to send athletes abroad.

The Olympic Committee had threatened to cut off financing last year, but relented at the last minute and provided Roller Sports with $100,000.

Send the Best is asking the skate community to assist with its fund drive by posting its flyer, making donations and soliciting donations.

Sponsor-donors will get ads on the Send the Best web site, its wall calendar and in a program that will be distributed at the 2006 National Speed Skating Championships.

The top fund-raiser (or fund-raisers) will win two passes (value $150) to the Indoor National Speed Skating Championships in Lincoln, Neb. (See new prize update in sidebar.)
