Cactus Classic Teeters On Edge of Extinction
Arizona's only inline marathon will be a no-show again this year

The Cactus Classic inline marathon appears headed for the mothball fleet of defunct skate events.

"Things are not looking good to continue doing it," said lead organizer Ed Wachter.

The Tucson-area event will not be held this year and is unlikely to return in 2007 ... "unless something miraculous happens," Wachter said.

Organizers canceled last year's event, which would have been the ninth annual, after failing to find sponsors.

This year, they slashed their fund-raising goal by more than half, to $6000. But the result was the same. "We've been trying to find some money — but there's just nothing," Wachter said.

The late-season event attracts a small but loyal following. But it has never reached the size to cause corporate sponsors to take notice.

About 160 skaters participated in the last Cactus Classic in the fall of 2004.

Wachter said organizers were not entirely giving up on the event. "Maybe we'll be able to bring it back later," he said.
