Obama’s Speech at the Inaugural Skate Ball

(Editor’s note: This story was written to amuse and entertain — and to pique your interest in this week’s swag.)

My fellow Americans, it is an honor for me to be here with you tonight at the Inaugural Skate Ball. I will be the first to admit that I haven’t been skating much lately. But now, as your president, I pledge to rededicate myself to our wonderful sport.

In fact, as my first executive order, I am converting the White House Bowling Alley to the White House Roller Rink.

Others urged me to devote my first official act to more weighty matters. There were calls for a war crimes investigation of the outgoing administration. And my new friend Sen. McCain asked … well, begged me … to start negotiations to return Alaska to Russia, as long as they would agree to keep Gov. Palin.

But instead, I set my sites on the White House Roller Rink.

And that’s just half of it. I also persuaded the Inline Planet to offer skaters an incredible deal on 100mm wheels.

I told the editors, “Look, we’re in a recession. We’ve already bailed out the banks and the auto industry. What are we going to do for the skaters?”

At first, they weren’t overly helpful. “How about we offer sets of Hyper Stripe 100mm wheels for $60 a piece,” they said

“What!” I said. “You call yourself Americans? These days, sixty bucks and a postage stamp will buy you Citibank. … You’ve got to do better than that!”

And they did.

They agreed to sell sets of Hyper Neutron 100mm wheels (great for both outdoor and indoor skating) for $44! … That’s unheard of!

But what can I say? Change has come to America. … Sets of 100mm wheels for $44. … That’s change we can believe in!

Well I guess we know what side of the fence you sit on. Leave the politics out of the sport.

This website seems to be filled with good skating information. Don’t detract from all the good information by showing how misinformed you are on the political front.

  2. Bill Says:

Hey Right Winger- That is the risk you take whenever you stray away from Republican-party approved internet propaganda sites- some irritating truthiness may penetrate your pupils! You better stick to the Drudge Report and Faux News from now on! And don’t make any more feeble attempts to restrict the free speech of other people. You may have better luck finding kindred spirits in one of the blood sports- inline skating is kind of dominated by over-educated urban elites.

  3. drazen pecanic Says:

Im from a little country in Europe and i think that USA finally has a good president the only man thats good like Kenedy who was killed by rightwing radicals in the USA.I think its normall that a person like Obama suports skating because in Europe Germany,Austria,Chech-republic,italy,France people that skate are not idiots like in Jerry Springer show that kind of people don”t skate
they watch TV eat and vote for George Bush the worst president that USA had.

  4. right winger Says:

Bill……you need to learn how to read. I publicly stated I am a right winger. I was respectful in my tone, and complimentary to the site as well. My point was to say that politics need not be a part of the site as it detracts from the quality information that can be had here. I am not attempting to restrict free speech, just mentioning that politics belongs on political sites. It is typical liberal behavior to insult when you truly have no argument to back up your beliefs.

Drazen, I understand that you don’t have a clear understanding of American politics. So I forgive your ignorant comments.

  5. left ringer Says:

All politics aside - this story (and the interview with Putin, and others) is what we call parody. Let’s all just get along and let it roll.

  6. Bill Says:

Bush/Cheney/Rove/Rumsfeld/Gonzalez war crimes are fair game for parody. It is not like there is any doubt (among thinking people) that an investigation is necessary. See http://www.democrats.com/ for the facts about the latest of many subpoenas for Carl Rove.

“When Democrats took control of Congress in 2007 and subpoenaed Karl Rove, he refused to appear by claiming “absolute immunity.” This claim was always without basis in law, but it became ludicrous after Rove left the White House. Still, Rove stuck to it because George Bush was still the Unitary Executive until January 20, 2009. One of the first acts of the new Congress was to renew its old subpoenas to Rove, Harriet Miers, and John Bolten. Today John Conyers sent another subpoena, but this time Rove won’t have the White House protecting him. Could a frogmarch be in Rove’s future?”

  7. Franz Says:

Hm, I was expecting to find a product review… Has anyone actually tested these wheels?
I am from a little bit bigger country in Europe and have to admit that I found the text above quite amusing. You know, those guys from the “old world” tend to like the change that has happened in this country (now my country too)
Too bad a “flame war” broke out… Take it easy :-)

  8. Brian S. Says:

Will there be a new SWAG sale item up? I keep checking each Wednesday or Thursday, but these wheels have been here for 3+ weeks.

  9. ~LaMarcianA~ Says:

HAHA…just breezing through & was a little amused with ‘Obama/s consideration of the white house bowling alley for a roller rink’, but even more amused by all of ur comments on the subject! LOL

  10. Charlie Brown Says:

Maybe this recession will bring more people back into roller skating, and bump things up back to the 80’s crowd., it was booming back then. Just a thought.

  11. Online Says:

  12. Brian S. Says:

Another week, and still no new swag.

What’s the plan with this site? Is it being discontinued?

  13. Brian S. Says:
