Celebrate Healthy Sat. at Golden Gate Park

Postby Robert on Thu May 24, 2007 7:55 pm

From D. Miles:

You are invited to the first celebration of Healthy Saturdays in Golden Gate Park this Saturday, May 26th!

As you probably know, the long push to expand car-free space in the Park was successful. Thanks to a compromise supported last month, starting this week, Saturdays will be car-free on JFK Drive between Tea Garden Dr. (near 8th Ave.) and Transverse Dr. all day. This is roughly half the amount of space as the Sunday car-free zone, and Healthy Saturdays will be in place thru September. (A plan to make this permanent -- each April thru September, 6 months per year -- will be voted on within a few months at the Board of Supervisors. And we're eager for it to pass. Stay tuned for more info. on that.)

We hope you can join us for the celebration of the first Healthy Saturday this Saturday, May 26th. Bring your skates, your bikes, your frisbees, your kids, your dogs, whatever you want to enjoy the Park in all its glory.

There will be a special, brief group celebration on Saturday from 12 noon until 12:30pm on the Bridge at JFK Dr. & Tea Garden Dr. We'll be thanking our #1 safe space champion, Supervisor Jake McGoldrick of the Richmond, and other Healthy Saturdays supporters. There will even be cake!

(If you can't make this weekend's fun, fear not, we'll be holding more fun events in the Park on future Saturdays. Stay tuned & please let me know if you'd like to help spread the word about the new Healthy Saturdays!)

Finally, thanks to all of you who made phone calls, wrote letters, and attended hearings to support Healthy Saturdays. We did it! And we look forward to celebrating with you -- this Saturday & every Saturday!

Hi Skaters,

What a fantastic weekend in Golden Gate Park. Today is the last day of the first ever 3 day car free weekend in Golden Gate Park. The first Saturday closure was a great success. Channel 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, KCBS radio, SF Chronicle and the Examiner all came out for the ceremonies. Supervisor Jake McGoldrick was in the groove thrusting and gyrating to the funky beat with the hula hoop. The entire negotiating crew Leah, Rick, Dan, Jean Mike and myself were in the house as Leah presented Jake with a certificate of appreciation from all of us for being our hero.

Check out the Chronicle article at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... 009&sc=299

Chris D has poster some great photos of this Sk8Historic day at http://www.sfpix.com/healSat.html There will be a bigger celebration later in June. I was able to capture 2 of the news clips of the event. I will post a complete video soon.

ON THE FUNNY AND RIDICULOUS

This Sk8Historic weekend in Golden Gate Park represents the first time in 40 years the road closures were ADA complaint. (Americans With Disabilities Act) Saturday began the new shuttle system that takes the handicapped and elderly people who don't skate, bike or get around on wheels like we do through the car free areas. The official tram is not finished yet, so in order to close the roads and keep it ADA complaint, the City hired the Yellow Cab Company temporarily to shuttle people through until the tram is secured.

On Sunday the shuttle was operating just as you see it on the pic at http://www.sfpix.com/healSat.html. Hardly anyone used the shuttle. It was always empty. They have to drive through the park at 5 MPH all day. At about 4:40 P.M., just as the shuttle passed us where we were skating, violence broke out. One of the Cushman carts cut of the path of the other Cushman cart. The driver of cart 1 got out and started punching out the driver of cart 2. The skaters rolled in and broke up the fight. I could not believe what I was seeing. The police came out. All that time there was a couple inside the taxi watching the whole thing unfold. They got out of the taxi and walked away. No complaints were files and the shuttle went off into the distance at 5 MPH. We all laughed and went back to skating.

What a great day in the park. We'll be there today. This is the last of the three day weekend road closures.
