Proposed Bush Budget Cuts to the Quick

There is no beating around the Bush. The occupation of Iraq has to paid for by someone. It's no surprise that our Bush league President proposes cutting the funding from the very programs that can help prevent the present epidemic of obesity and diabetes.
Maybe that’s how he will save social security....there won't be anyone healthy enough, to live long enough, to collect. Bushwacked on the road to retirement.

Here are some other budget cuts that are planned.

The government run program on teaching kids not to eat plastic ($150 billion per year)
The government run program on teaching kids not to lick frozen metal polls ($20 billion per year)
The government run program on teaching kids not to stick popsicle sticks into house fans ($50 billion per year)
The government run program on teaching kids not to eat yellow snow ($150 billion per year)

These tasks are all programs that should be and will be taught within family homes. It is cheap to make good meals from scratch. Why would you want a government that tells us what we should eat? This should be our responsibility, the blame falls on family's not teaching kids how to eat.

I agree with the obesity problem. I see 1/2 the kids in their teens and 20's being fat. The best speed skaters are all older.

I also see parents not making lunches for the kids, and letting the kids get crap food in school.

I can see Gov regulation on junk food in schools. I do agree with that.

No government can compete/afford "no matter how many programs and much money is used" with concerned Mothers and Fathers on their kids eating habits.

Rollerblade has a Skates in Schools program? It must not be working very well. I don't think my school owns a single pair of skates.

Thank goodness there are some practical thinking folks on that subcommittee. This country needs an athletic President, instead of an apathetic one, to get folks off their butts and onto their feet. Rail lines are sublime! They make for great skating, walking, or cycling. Where is Teddy Roosevelt when we need him??? Probably rolling over and over but not on inlines.

That's a good point Adam. I wonder myself if, instead of being 220lbs I could be 190, by how much my 1h37m in the marathon would improve.... Damn'd Big Macs I had more than my share when I lived in the US.

However, as a country it is time to realize that the government does not need to replace parents, as you said. Without the teaching of parents at home, no program will likely ever be succesful, no matter how much money you put into it.

I agree that parents have a big role in helping their children develop healthy lifestyles. But kids only spend part of their day with their parents. And parents aren't perfect either. They need help.

They need schools that provide their children with healthy choices, healthy foods and healthy activities ... such as inline skating.

And we need a government that supports this, which it can do, in part, by continuing to fund PEP grants and by continuing to support the fund that provides money for the development of parks and trails.
