another newbie question

Postby mikew968 on Mon Oct 06, 2008 1:41 am

I have just started (i did some about 10 years ago on RB lightenings) and am looking to improve...both my skating and my physical conditioning. I have been skating for about 2 months and skate on RB speedmachine 6.0 with 90mm wheels. I am currently skating at about 5minute miles (12mph) for 8-10 miles per session about 3 days per week. I am 45.
--Where do I find training routines? What is the time/spped/distance I should be going?
--Is there any skating groups in Cincinnati, Ohio?

Thanks, Mike

The last question, looking for local groups, is the most significant. To find them, contact Pyro, who is local to you:

One answer, not necessarily right, about your ideal training program, starts with considering how you feel after your present training is done. If you aren't exhausted, gradually try increasing your speed and distance, until you've reached your potential. Also, sometimes do shorter distances, such as 100-500 yards, at the highest speed you safely can. Do this early in your training day, after you are warmed up, but before you are close to being exhausted.

Beyond that, if you can't hook up with someone local, skate with others in some skate races. And consider occasionally skating with an indoor team. And, for general physical conditioning, talk with people who understand that in general, such as for running and cycling, because those general principles apply well to skating, just that you'll exercise on skates rather than on a bicycle/whatever.
