Re: NROC Fact Sheet

The NROC outline, as currently posted, says:
The point system will rank pro skaters and teams. It will be based on race placement with the largest number of points awarded to the top finishers.

Well, gee... I kinda thought that, through my patient and careful explanations and examples, I had demonstrated that mere finish order (placement) is vastly inferior, for many reasons, to calibrated times as a basis for the point system. Did we not get that point across?

Robert,
NROC Series - Great Idea. As a 66 year old fitness skater I need to see verification this series will include fitness, rec, or all non-pro skaters. In all the posts I think there were something like 5 posts which had some reference to "non-pro" skaters. I did not see that in the NROC Outline. Set me straight if I missed it. My wife & I are both now retired and do travel around the country participating in inline marathons. Next year we plan to add Chicagoland, Houston, & Squiggy Classic to our "Senior Tour". We do this for three reasons: to SUPPORT events people work hard to establish, to participate in challenging (26.2) marathons, & to meet new skating folks. I get nervous when new race events are getting established, as I fear fitness & rec skaters might be left out. I hope the standard marathon distance would be the basis for the series as this distance is a good challenge for a lot of us "non-pro" folks. Having some other distances for those who are trained to go farther could also be considered. Are there provisions for having age group categories? Just some thoughts from a fitness skater.

Hi, Skatetothesun.

Yes, non-pro, fitness and rec skaters are a big part of the plan. (Maybe I should have spelled that out more clearly in the fact sheet.)

The performance-based system is designed with non-pros in mind and is similar to the NASTAR system used to rate recreational downhill skiers.

Here's what the fact sheet says about the performance system:
The Performance System

The performance system ("NROC Prime Plus") will provide all race participants with a way to rate their performance in individual races as well as over the course of the season. All skaters will earn a performance score for each race based on their time as compared to the "prime time," a theoretical peak time. Performance scores will be averaged over the series to determine NROC leaders in various age categories.

I hope that answers your question. ... We'll provide more details about the performance series in the coming weeks as we finalize the details.
Robert
