A Week After Winning the Cactus Classic, Nelson and Eldridge Win the Silver Strand

Second Year for Half Marathon Is Bigger

By Robert "Silver Lining" Burnson

Jordan Nelson and Stacey Eldridge continued their winning ways, finishing first in the men's and women's divisions in the 2004 Silver Strand Half Marathon in San Diego.

Randy Bowman, who won the Silver Strand last year, finished second behind Nelson.

A week earlier, Nelson and Eldridge were the top male and female finishers in the Cactus Classic VIII inline marathon in Arizona.

Pro racer Howard Yeh of the San Diego Street Elite skate club said the race got off to a quick start this year. The torrid pace quickly thinned out the lead pack, and after the fifth mile, only the top three male finishers were left.

Yeh, who finished sixth in the pro men's division, said the weather was nearly perfect for today's race: sunny with temperatures in the low-50s.

The Silver Strand is part of a large running half marathon put on by Koz Enterprises of San Diego. The inline portion is in its second year.

No official figures were yet available on the number of skaters in this year's event. Yeh said the number was around 200. Last year, there were 165 skaters, according to Koz.

(Thanks, Howard, for your help!)
