Racing News: Canadian Men, Bont Women Dominate Wolverine Inline Marathon
Short-track ice skater wins men's race

(posted Saturday, May 27, 2006) Canadian short-track ice skater Olivier Jean rolled to a big victory in today's Wolverine Inline Marathon in Detroit. Making a rare appearance on inline skates, the Montreal racer shot away from the lead pack a couple miles from the finish line and built a large lead. He finished 500 meters ahead of the next group of skaters. "He was by far the strongest skater out there today," said Bont North America's Glenn Koshi. Jean was a member of the 2005 Canadian national short-track ice team but narrowly missed qualifying for the Torino Olympics. He was skating today as a guest member of the Bont North America/Rudy Project team. Canadians also claimed the next two spots: Peter Doucet (K2-Empire) finished third; Aaron Arndt (Bont North America/Rudy Project), fourth. Chicagoan Peter Starykowicz, winner of the Metrodome Inline Marathon, finished fifth. Bont's Jilleanne Rookard easily won the women's race. She skated with the men's pack for about half the distance before falling back. Bont's Mechele Busby finished second; Erica O'Conner was third. One hundred skaters raced in the event, said organizer Catherine Astalos of the Wolverine ice speed skating team.
